MAKERS + MOVERS: SLEEPING MONK

makers + movers is a series that feature makers of clean products of integrity, thought, + passion which then move the world towards a higher consciousness . . .

Sleeping Monk found me after listless travel, a flare, + the general malaise that was creeping over every inch of my brain with the endless grey daze of a never-ending Winter. I was tired—mentally drained, physically thrown, + emotionally overcome. The shift I have experienced after including these super tonic herbal tinctures in my daily routine has me deeply grateful for the magic that Louis Lenard is crafting. His potions are synergistically formulated to build the Three Treasures within Chinese Taoist Medicine: jing [the foundational powerhouse of the body], qi [the energy or vitality generated through the metabolising of nutrients, breath, + movement], + shen [the energy of the mind + spirit].

The herbs are an incredibly potent selection that includes wild asparagus root [beautifying, hydrating, + kidney-strengthening], rehmannia [blood-building, oxygenating, + adrenal-supporting], + black reishi [immunity-boosting, blood sugar-stabilising, + promotes healthy neuron activity]
I have been taking ten drops of Immortelle [renews vitality, beautifies the skin, + supports the immune system]  under my tongue in the morning after breakfast + ten drops of Well-Rested [releases tension from the body, promotes a restful sleep, + balances mood]  in the evening before bed for a sweet slumber amongst the stars.

LOUIS LENARD, SLEEPING MONK | Los Angeles, CA
Q: Tell us a little about you + what inspired you to create Sleeping Monk

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, CA. Growing up along the coastline of SoCal, I got heavily into the surfing, skateboarding, music and partying lifestyle. I ended up burning the candle at all ends imaginable through my teens and twenties, finding myself severely physically, mentally and spiritually depleted by the time I was thirty.
Sleeping Monk was created as part of my healing process that began shortly after I got sober and began to turn my life around.  I took my passion and sometimes obsessive behavior and refocused it into something I found to help me heal and thrive, and I believed it could do the same for others.

Q: Where do you source your ingredients from?
After extensive research, we have chosen a source of herbs that independently test at 2 separate labs for not only safety, but for efficacy as well. Most of the herbs originate in China and other regions throughout Asia.

Q: Do you have a ritual for using your products?
Absolutely. Oftentimes I’ll quietly or silently chant purification and/or protection mantras as I take the formulas. I also have my daily routines/rituals at different times of the day for the different products, i.e. Immortal and Mind Sharpener within 1 hour of awakening and again in the early afternoon. Well Rested mostly just at bedtime. I also bookend a workout with Mind Sharpener before for focus and intensity and then Immortal after to restore and recover. I use Super Immunity mostly as a proactive measure to protect from diseases. Otherwise, I’ll load up on it to help heal faster in the rare instance I do get sick.

Q: What are your current favourite herbs to use + what are their benefits?
Such a good question! I love Schizandra, Chaga, Reishi, Astragalus, Ashwaganda and so many others actually, but I’ll try to keep it simple here:

Schizandra berries for  their adaptogenic, (regulating, balancing, nourishing and protecting) qualities for the nerves and adrenals, for beautiful skin, for liver detox and regeneration and also for their astringent qualities, which helps with athletic and sexual endurance.

Chaga and Astragalus for their adaptogenic and tonifying, (strengthening to cells, organs and systems), qualities for the immune system.

Reishi  for the same reasons, but also for helping broaden spiritual perspective.

I find Ashwaganda to be a great adaptogen for the nervous system. It’s often referred to as ‘Indian Ginseng’, as it’s a real powerhouse for enhancing metabolic processes. It helps calm anxiety and overstimulation from caffeine.

Q: What would you say to the herb skeptic? What is so potent about them in the prevention + treatment of ailments?
The first thing I’d say to the herb skeptic, or anyone else, for that matter is, “Do what works for you”.  If western medicine’s pharmaceutical drugs are working to improve your health and enhance the quality of your life, why stop?

The problem tends to be that these drugs are synthesized by man and come with a cost of organ degeneration and a litany of other side effects. As well, relief is usually only temporary and these drugs often create dependency.

It’s so ridiculous—almost humorous—when I catch a drug ad on tv. I can’t believe how people succumb to this type of health care, a.k.a. ‘disease management’ after listening to the horrific possible consequences of the side effects. Perhaps it’s the tactic of telling us these things while playing soothing music and showing shots of the loving couple frolicking at the beach in the gentle breeze during sunset. Maybe these sick people just don’t know, or believe that any other options exist.

I will say that herbs are created by nature and have synergistic qualities that can never be duplicated by man. Our body has the innate ability to heal itself, all we have to do is assist it. When we employ herbs, especially the adaptogenic Tonic herbs, they discover and regulate imbalances, harmonize, nourish and strengthen. This is done in a very safe and gentle way to assist us on the path to meaningful, powerful and lasting changes with our health.

We all know that anything worthwhile in life doesn’t happen overnight. If we can work together to inspire people to invest in their longevity and quality of life, they may see the benefits of trying a different approach than the ‘quick fix’ solutions that get us nowhere but worse off in the long run. The key to be successful with herbs, like any other good habit, is to be consistent. Then the miracles happen…

Q: When you are not working on Sleeping Monk, what else do you like to do?
I love to surf, play tennis, golf, do yoga, go to the gym, meditate, read about and experiment with herbs and superfoods of all kinds, play my guitar, ride my motorcycle and spend time with family.

Q: What keeps you going? Do you have a daily routine or a mantra?
I try to be of service and help others every day.

Q: What are some of your favourite snacks or foods that fuel your creative process?
Sleeping Monk Mind Sharpener for sure, lol! Also, Lotus Blooming Herbs Shilajit, coconut water, Elemental Wizdom’s Reishi Spore Oil and I also have recently been enjoying the Sun Potion Mucuna Pruriens.
Q: What are your three staples for glowing health?
A positive mental attitude, meditation and being of service.
Q: What would be an ideal day for you?
Ideal days are the days I realize that I’m making a positive difference in people’s lives, either with Sleeping Monk, being of service in other ways, or in just seeing their smile!
Q: What are your go-to products in your holistic medicine cabinet?
Alkaline water, all Sleeping Monk formulas, Schizandra, Chaga, systemic and digestive enzymes, coconut water, vitamin C.

Q: What is your next big vision for Sleeping Monk?
I have a lot of ideas, some of which I unfortunately cannot reveal yet! Otherwise, we’ll be releasing new products this year and focusing on slow, steady, lasting growth and looking into partnering with some great causes to help others regain and build health and live the life that dreams are made of.
