MAKERS + MOVERS: RAAW IN A JAR

I was overjoyed when I came across Trice Angie's skincare line Raaw in a Jar of oils, salts, + powders packed with healing ingredients. I was even more overcome when I tried her newly-débuted face potion. This bottle lives up to its name + is the most silky oil that has ever graced my über-sensitive skin. It feels slightly on the heavier side during application yet is absorbed super quickly, feeding the skin with nourishing oils such as kukui nut seed oil + frankincense. These are incredibly powerful anti-inflammatory + soothing agents. Kukui also means 'enlightenment' in Hawaiian and I don't doubt that my skin has reached it with this bottle. With its deep floral + woodsy sweetness from Tahitian vanilla and ylang ylang, this face potion is a dream to apply at night. It carries me into the sweetest slumber in its aromatherapeutic cloud . . .

TRICE ANGIE, RAAW IN A JAR | denmark + williamsburg, ny
Q: Tell us a little bit about you and what inspired you to start your skincare line.
I started RAAW after a terrible allergic reaction from a certain high-end skincare brand that I had trusted. I woke up one morning with purple spots under my eyes and honestly, I looked 5 years older! I started researching for a natural way to fix my skin and found out that organic avocado oil has amazing healing powers. So I bought it, used it for two days and the rash was gone. Amazing! This experience definitely woke me up. From that moment on, I wanted to know exactly what I put on my skin. If I couldn’t understand the label, I trashed it. Simple as that. That is how “RAAW in a jar” started - all natural and organic with healing combinations of the best oils and ingredients from nature.

Q: What inspired the name?

I wanted it to be something simple that explained the product. When I was making these products just for myself, I would use jelly jars to hold the products so it made sense to simply call it Raw… in a jar. The spelling of Raaw is a combination of Danish word Raa, which means raw and of course Raw in English. It sounds more complicated when I have to explain it!

Q: Do you have a ritual for applying your products?

I have the Uplifting Face Elixir with me in my purse at all times - I use it to freshen up and to get that instant glow. It’s perfect for a long day in front of a computer when you need a little boost. I use the Silk Effect Face Potion every morning and night as a face moisturizer. The Miracle Oil is the best multi-purpose product. I use it as a makeup remover, scalp treatment before I wash my hair and as a body moisturizer after shower. I work in all the other products in my complete ritual but I’m addicted to these three products at the moment.

Q: How long did it take for you to craft your products to the state it is in now? What was that experience like for you?
It has been an amazing journey. I first started out making lip balms in little candy tins. My first moisturizers were packaged in jelly jars with no labels. I didn’t have a logo or any branding since I was only making the products for my family and friends at the time. Then I was introduced to my graphic designer Julie Panton. She lives in Denmark and I live in New York so we created the whole identity of RAAW over video-skype calls. It seemed impossible at one point but we did it and I absolutely love the result. I was very inspired by the vintage apothecary look and I think she nailed it! Now we’re in 20 Urban Outfitters in the US - so a lot has happened since.

Q: When you are not working on your line, what else do you like to do?

I still work with film and it’ll always probably be part of my life in some way or another. I grew up on a film set since both of my parents are in the industry and so it’ll always be a big part of my life.

Q: What are your three staples for glowing health?

Everything organic, exercise, and sleep! That combination really works for me.

Q: Besides your divine products, what do you do or use to keep your skin beautiful? What is your beauty routine?

I use a lot of aloe vera and honey. Honey makes a great mask for irritated/dry skin and aloe vera is perfect to heal any smaller scars, cracked skin, etc. You can find aloe vera leaves in any organic supermarket - just cut a little piece to apply directly on your skin and leave it on overnight. Keep the rest in the fridge for later use.

Q: What are some of your skincare staples and favourite brands?

Clean, organic products. I really like the Danish brand Rudolph Care and since I don’t make sunscreen, I use Rudolph Care when I need an SPF. For hair products, I would definitely recommend Phyto - it’s clean and it works!

Q: What are your go-to products in your holistic medicine cabinet?

Traumeel from Heel! It heals damaged/cracked skin and improves circulation. I always have one laying around near me.

Q: What is your next big vision for Raaw in a Jar?

Europe! By the end of summer RAAW is expanding to Europe. I’m VERY excited about it!
