Seasonal Transition Skin care & Routines with Fran Miller of F. MILLER Skincare

Seasonal Transition Skin care & Routines with Fran Miller of F. MILLER Skincare

1. Winter months and, even for those in warmer climates, seasonal transitions can deeply affect our skin. What do you suggest in protection?

Seasonal transitions are where I see the most change in my own skin and I pivot my routine accordingly. Just like in clothing, winter means layers, and the more moisture the better — a gentle non-stripping cleansing oil, a hydrating mist, nourishing oils, and extra layer of balm to protect against harsh conditions. If you're one to get a facial, I recommend timing them towards the end of a season, allowing you to start fresh as the weather turns. For warmer climates, focus on sun protection and hydration, both internally and externally.

2. What is unique about F. MILLER oil blends that yield this environmental protection?

Each ingredient we use is gathered ethically, organic when possible, and sourced from its native growing region for maximum efficacy and minimal environmental stress. We hand-blend all of our formulas and create our herbal infusions in-house and in small batches. This helps prevent waste, maintains freshness & efficacy, and gives us complete control over the quality of ingredients and concentrations.

Outside of the oils, we strive to use biodegradable, recyclable and reusable packaging with the highest content of post-consumer waste whenever possible. Above all else, we prioritize transparency, environmental and social consciousness, and integrity. We make decisions for both present and future with care, mindfulness and intention. Always considering our impact and constantly striving to evolve and grow.

3. What would you tell those who are suspicious of or hesitant about oils because they’re acne-prone?

While certain oils can be too clogging for acne-prone skin, the right blend and formula can in fact significantly help clarify skin and treat blemishes, inflammation, and congestion. As someone who is prone to both facial and body breakouts myself, it was important to me to formulate our entire line with balancing, soothing, antibacterial oils at the forefront. Correct application is also important — a small amount goes a long way with botanical oils and damp skin is key for maximum absorption.

4. What’s your daily skin ritual?

I splash with cool water followed by a generous misting of F. MILLER Toning Mist. Followed by 1-2 minutes of gua sha massage using the F. MILLER Face Oil (I run the tool under cold water for an extra awakening / depuffing situation).

Working from home allows me to skip the makeup and start the day with a super hydrating skincare routine. 1-3 times a week I'll do a mask that I can leave on while I do my morning things. I've recently had a new formula sample on rotation. I also love mixing Activist Manuka honey with a bit of white clay or kefir when my skin is feeling dry, reactive, and in need of nourishment. Especially ideal for the winter months.

There's usually an F. MILLER Lip Balm in every corner of my home, it's extremely nourishing and protective, almost like a light lip mask that lasts for hours. I also keep the Toning Mist at arm's length to refresh throughout the day. It's a super hydrating blend of rose, calendula, aloe, and green tea that instantly plumps, revives, and balances.

A bottle of F. MILLER Eye Oil is in the fridge for the 3pm fatigue that often sets in. It has cucumber and green coffee to depuff and a stainless steel roller ball that instantly cools and awakens. It does double duty to moisturize dry cuticles too.

5. Stress, which affects our skin, has been at an all-time high this past year. How do you find a sense of calm inside and therefore out?

When I'm feeling disconnected or overwhelmed, I turn to nature to find my sense of calm. When you work closely with plants and see how transformative and healing they can be, it makes sense that nature as a whole would do the same for your mind / mental state. Taking breaks for short walks and fresh air (even when it's freezing), catching the sunrise, birdwatching, taking a minute to observe the neighborhood trees and surroundings beyond my computer screen — these all help me reset.

6. What’s one thing that has consistently made a difference in your skin health?

Less but better. I had struggled with a range of skin sensitivities and only began to find relief and results upon shifting my routine to a simpler, gentler, more nourishing one, led by an intuitive and supportive approach, both inside and out.
